In highshools in America today, popularity is a big factor. Many teens feel that being popular is of great importance, when in reality it shouldnt be. Several kids today go through many struggles to try and become what they or others think is "popular".
Popularity can have huge effects on students in schools everywhere. In the book Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, popularity had a very big effect on Peter. When the popular group of kids would bully and tease him, he would get put down. There are kids that feel the way that Peter felt every day, and look what measures Peter took in order to stop the bullying that he went through. Peter took the lives of ten people in his school that day.
Popularity is only something that some kids may feel is important through your middle school and highschool carreers. But what happens after highschool? Popularity is not a big fator then, and it wont get you where you need to be in life.
There is a very large difference between being popular, and belonging to a group. When you belong to a group of friends, you can always be yourself around them, and they will accept youfor you. Popularity is the opposite. When you try to be something your not, your so called "group" doesnt like you for the person you really are, but for who you may pretend to be.
Being popular is not everything. It is not going to make you a better person in your future, or get you any where. By striving to become popular, you can make some bad choices, hurt others, and sometimes even yourself. I feel that there is no need for wanting to be popular.
