“Popularity is not leadership” Richard Marcinko. If you want to be popular, you’re not being a leader you are being a follower, you are following everyone else and what they are doing. You should take a stand and create your own group. Being popular has its advantages and disadvantages. One minute you do something cool and your instantly popular and the next minute you say or do something stupid and your sixty seconds of fame is over. Anyone can be popular, but that doesn’t mean you have to belong to the popular crowd. You can be in the nerdy or gothic group and still consider yourself popular.
Becoming popular is so important, than I guess nothing else matters to you. You would rather be popular than have a drink of water when you are dying of thirst or needing shelter in a terrible storm. Would you be the type of person that would choose popularity in those two cases, than you are being really ignorant. Popularity should not be in the top ten essential things in your life, it should be towards the bottom. Say you become popular, that’s great but it is not the most monumental point in your life, you should be honored but don’t take it for granted.
There is major difference between being popular and belonging to the popular crowd. You become popular when you’re friends with pretty much everyone in your school, well-liked, and looked up to by many. You belong to the popular crowd than you might not be as cool as the actual “popular” kids, there is a possibility you may still be well-liked but you’re not as high on the totem pole as everyone else is. Popularity is a very controversial issue in a child or young adult’s life. Becoming popular can restore or shatter a person’s self-esteem.
Anyone can be popular, as long as you are with the people that appreciate you the most. You don’t have to be in the group with the jocks, cheerleaders, or athletes to be considered popular which everyone thinks is true. You can be the leader of the debate, chess, or glee club and still be considered popular. You don’t have to be funny, athletic, or cool to be popular; you can be a nerdy or gothic and still be popular in your own special way. You may wear all black or have a pocket protector, but who cares because you are with your friends. The true definition of being popular is being well-liked and considered a friend to the people that think you are cool to them. If you want to be popular than just be yourself and hang out with your true friends.
Popularity is a big issue talked about in schools all across the nation. What is being popular anyway? Is it being cool or funny or maybe even athletic, maybe it’s how many nice things you have? No, being popular is being surrounded by the people that like and care for you the most and would do anything for each other. Popularity is measured by how many nice things you possess or how many friends you have. That is the worst possible statistic of all. Popularity should be measured by how many good deeds or helpful actions you commit, maybe even how good of a citizen you are. Yes that should be the true definition of popularity. Don’t let popularity get to your head, stay true to yourself and be your own person.
