When you come home from school telling your mom that kids were making fun of you, does she almost always tell you to ignore them? Yeah, that might make you feel better, but it still hurts. There is nothing you can say or do to someone to make that pain go away. The only thing you can do is make it stop. Stand up for yourself. In Nineteen Minutes, Peter Houghton was bullied as a child. Peter never stood up for himself and one day he just had enough. That day Peter became the bully and shot more than ten kids in his school. The bullying was stopped and so did the pain.
Parents think that if their children just ignore what everyone is saying to them that it will not effect them deep down inside. Well they are wrong. Even if you try to ignore people teasing you everyday, you still hear it. Ignoring it only works to a certain point, then you need to stop it. Kids get teased everyday and people take it as no big deal. It is a big deal. No one should live a life being bullied. Everyone thinks it is so much fun to pick on the kid who doesn’t look like them-the one who is overweight or wears glasses. Everyone, of course, except the one who is being teased.
How do people choose who they want to bully? Do they have a certain type? It is not fair to make fun of people that wear glasses; they cannot help that they have bad eyesight. It is not fair to make fun of people who may be overweight; sorry everyone isn’t a stick. And who said it was fair to make fun of shy people? Some people just prefer to not say anything than to be loud and obnoxious. Children who don’t easily integrate socially shouldn’t be forced to change. They don’t need to change who they are just to fit in with the “popular” kids. They are who they are no matter how much they talk.
When a student is hurt socially, something needs to stop it. If a teacher sees a student being socially hurt they need to say something. The worst is when you witness a bad situation going on and do nothing to prevent it. Parents need to step in when they see that their children are being hurt socially. Horrible things happen when no one steps in, Nineteen Minutes is a great example of that. Parents and teachers have the maturity and experience to know that bullying is wrong. They must be the ones to influence kids positively.
Children need to stand up for themselves, but it is their parents’ job to teach them how. Peter Houghton was never taught to stand up for himself, and appeared weak to the other students, resulting in his bullying. “But the sad fact is that if Peter wants it to end, he’s going to have to be part of the solution.”(Page 73, lines 5 and 6) Parents and teachers cannot do it all, but they can help. No child should ever have to be bullied or left out.
