High schools will never be able to break down the barriers so that each and every student feels a part of the school. Everyone has their own personalities, and should not be forced to do something they do not want to do. Their are some kids who do not want to fit in, and make themselves stand out on purpose. Schools try to include everyone in something and therefore have different activities for students to do what they please.
High school is a model of society in general. There are so many different types of students with skills, abilities, likes and dislikes. For example, some of the different types of groups that are in high schools are known as the "jocks", "band kids", "emo/punk", "nerds" and the "popular" groups. The people who are not part of a labeled group, make themselves stand out by getting piercings, tattoos, dyeing their hair color, or by the way they dress. This is their own choice whether or not to fit in, which is why you cannot make everyone fit into the same mold. One group may feel as if they are better then everyone else, and look down on others.
Schools try to have something for everyone. There are multiple sports for the "jocks" such as soccer, football, field hockey and baseball. If you are interested in playing music, there are the "band kids", and ones who are in the Color Guard. For some students who are more on the quiet side, there are groups such as the yearbook staff and newspaper staff. There are students who are always willing to help people, and there are groups for them too, such as Interact and S.A.D.D (Students Against Destructive Decisions). If you want to be a future Lawyer or like to speak your mind, there is Model U.N. that people can join. The various opportunities for students to fit in are up to them. Schools provide more than enough choices of groups.
In various cases, many students may have a crossover between two or more of the labeled groups. For example, it is possible to have a "smart jock", or a "cool band kid" who plays in a rock band. It is difficult to put someone in a box with one label because everyone has different sides of them.
If schools were to make everyone the same and make everyone part of the same groups, It seems that people would be more upset and feel out of the group because they are forced to be someone who they are not. Schools do the best they can do to allow everyone to be involved and to make everyone feel part of the school. It is their decision on whether or not to join everyone or not.
