Popularity is probably the best thing in the world for some people. You are part of the ‘in’ crowd. Most everyone likes you just because you’re popular, and you don’t tend to get made fun of by other teens. It sounds like a pretty good thing to be popular that is why so many teens desire it. People want to be popular for numerous reasons. Some of these reasons may be to escape being bullied by others; having numerous amounts of friends that share the same mentality and beliefs; and being well liked by all the other popular teens, however this idea of popularity maybe a fabrication. Your friends may not turn out as nice as you believed. Teens are willing to risk losing their real friends just for their five minutes of fame. I believe that these are some of the reasons why teens want to be popular.
The difference between being popular and being part of a group is when you’re popular you have to work to maintain your popularity. Even if you’re popular, your so-called friends could turn on you at any moment to protect their own social status. An example from Nineteen Minutes is when Josie was made fun of by her popular friends as she intervened while they were harassing Peter. Being popular is more like a competition, constantly abiding by the standards set by individuals in a group.
I think belonging to a group is much better than being popular. Within a group you have many different individuals with different personalities that are united through one common interest. There are many different groups that include teens. Athletic teams, school clubs, Girl and Boy Scouts are examples of groups. Although there may be differences in opinions and interests, true friendships can be made because everyone is working towards the same objective.
I believe that some teens could be popular if they have confidence in themselves. Popularity is joining school clubs, athletic teams, and having a group of friends to share your high school experiences. If popularity means that you have to bully a student to the point of physical and mental harm as it was portrayed in the novel, than that is just being a jackass. That is the kind of kid who ends up being in trouble and has no friends to turn to.
