The monkey king is unhappy with the way he is because he is not like everyone else. He isn't even human like everyone which destroys his inner being. The monkey king wants to fit in with everyone and tries to change who he is so he can do so. Jin Wang is unhappy with the way he is because he doesn't look like anyone else. He always gets made fun of for his background and nobody can stop it. Jin Wang feels this way because on his first day of school he got made fun of, assumption of being from china, and more racial comments. Danny is unhappy with the way he is because he gets made fun of for his cousin Chin-kee. Also, his cousin is someone who wants to destroy Danny's reputation by embarrassing him in many different ways. Danny feels this way because of his cousins actions and looks. Automatically when Danny finds out his cousin is going to be in town he gets very upset and down.

Yes, the monkey...and the other boys...try to change themselves in order to fit it. In a way, Chin-kee seems to be the only one not ashamed of who he is, but he really is an embarassment to Danny. Why do you think the author makes Chin-kee so offensive? Is Danny right to be ashamed?
It must be difficult to be different, especially for a young person who may not be completely comfortable in his or her "skin." Kids seem to be more aware of and concerned with fitting. Do you agree?
