After reading Nineteen Minutes the effects of bullying on a person came to my attention more than any other time in my whole life. The amount of torture Peter encountered was unbelievable. What Peter needed was help which unfortunately he never received. When Peter was younger his parents would tell him to ignore the hurt and rejection. "Just ignore them Peter." Lacy told Peter after he was being harassed in the fourth grade. Lacy went into the principal about the bullies and the principal did not do anything. However, parents’ telling their children to do this is just not enough. Parents make it seem like it is easy to ignore the bullies. Parents need to take further actions than just telling them to ignore what the bullies are saying. This obviously will not make a difference.
Students who are shy should not change who they are to become stronger due to bullies. They should remain as they are and not have to be worried about bullies. If there is a situation involving bullies it is the job of either a teacher or parent to help the student. Therefore, teachers and parents have the responsibility to intervene when a student/child is hurt socially. If a parent is told by their child that they are having difficulties with other students at school, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school. When the school is notified it is the principal’s or the teacher’s job to keep an eye on for the bullies. And when the bullies are caught in the act consequences have to be harsher so that that both the school and victim can be insured that it will not happen again. I also believe that peers have a responsibility to intervene with bullies when acting as a witness. It is very important that peers notify a teacher or adult about the circumstance so therefore, the bully can have a consequence.
