To most kids, being popular is a privilege. Some kids are granted with this privilege, instead of those who put themselves in situations to try to achieve popularity, whether it’s within their group of friends or in general. Some teens believe there is a certain criteria to being popular. Being popular isn’t the most important thing in the world, having true friends or getting good grades is more important. There is a difference to being popular and being popular in a group.
Being popular usually means knowing everyone or having a group of friends that everyone knows. When your popular in a group, your friends mostly look to you as a leader. When you’re generally popular, this implies that everyone knows you. In a group, sometimes friends follow you, or look to you to make decisions for them. When girls or guys become the leader of a group, they can make themselves popular by knowing everyone. Not everyone in a group is popular, but they can be popular in their own ways and hang out with more than one group of friends.
Teens have the tendency to do certain things to be popular. Most won’t even be themselves, like how Josie is with her friends but she knows that’s not her. It’s like a certain criteria that says you have to look like this and you have to act like that. Being kooky and weird doesn’t work out with popularity. One of the biggest factors is money. If you are wealthy and have all of the IN things you can fit in perfectly. Attitude is another role in popularity, most teen’s that are popular aren’t that friendly. In Nineteen Minutes the popular kids were always out for someone to pick on. They can send kids home crying from being such bullies. There are the privileges to being popular, for example you get more friends and you get to go to more parties. Most people can also realize that you can have fun with being yourself and being with your true friends.
Being popular doesn’t mean that you belong to the group. You can buy yourself in or act the way that the popular group will act. That’s when your “group of friends” is really your friends they will talk about you behind your back and just happen to forget that they were suppose to hang out with you but leave you for a party. Being in this position is not comfortable. It is not a place where most teens want to be but they withstand it for the chance of being popular. When they obtain this being of popularity they realize it’s not that great because they don’t belong. The ones that do belong will make sure that they understand that they don’t.
Facing popularity can be scary yet rewarding. Most teens choose to stay within their own groups with their true friends. Being true to yourself could be rewarding because it shows who you are and it opens an unlimited amount of happiness. Why do people put themselves in uncomfortable positions? Teens should be more focused of their grades other than each other. Think about in Nineteen Minutes. If the popular kids didn’t pick on Peter most of them would still be alive and everyone would be happy.
