Fighting in school is a very big concern that should not be tolerated. Most of the time, it’s the boys that if someone verbally bothers them, they will physically come back at them. Girls, however, usually only use verbal abuse. On page 73, Lacy says to Peter,” The next time it happens, you have to stick up for yourself. You have to, Peter, or I…I’m going to punish you.” Parents should be concerned also about fighting that happens among their children and they should try to put an end to it. Friends should also be worried about their friends and try to stop the fighting before it gets worse.
Every school should have a fighting policy. If two or more kids get into a physical fight, they both should be in trouble. Depending on the reason, the consequences might not be that bad for some of the kids involved. Fighting without a reason however, will end up with serious consequences. Friends and family should care for one another if someone is getting teased and taunted. Standing up for someone isn’t always hitting the person who is saying and doing mean things, but it’s being a friend to the person who is getting hurt. Helping someone out doesn’t have to be hitting the person back, but taking your friend out for a good time; to make him or her forget about being bullied. I think that the problems Peter faces in Nineteen Minutes could have been prevented if he only had a few friends to go to.
When one of your friends is hurt emotionally, it’s easy to cheer them up. Peers have the responsibility to go and help each other when their down because that’s what true friends do; they care for each other. Josie should have stood up for Peter when she found out that everyone had read the love note to her that he wrote. On page 317, Matt and Drew are talking about how Matt is going mess Peter up for writing the love letter to Josie. Josie was there with them and heard the conversation, I think that was her opportunity to step up and be a friend to Peter and defend him a little bit. Fighting is never the answer, there’s always better ways to solve problems.
