Most kids these days do not have reasons as to why they are doing the things that they do. Nobody knows why some kids pick on specific one or two kids almost every day of their lives. Adults tend not to look into the details about bullying. They do not realize it happens every day to certain kids or that it is the same bully doing it in and outside of school. Most of the time the victims are told it will be taken care of, but it is usually just swept under the carpet. For example when Peter told his teachers and mom about being bullied, all they said was to ignore it or toughen up. Kids like Peter are more of a lover not a fighter.
When someone strikes someone else it should matter if they were provoked to do it or not. Sometimes kids fight just to fight, no other reason. Nobody should have to deal with being bullied for no reason everyday by the same group of kids. It is not fair to them. Peter was picked on everyday by the same “popular” group. He did not do anything wrong to them, he barely ever spoke to any of them except Josie every so often. Peter was just their targets. After all the bullying Peter was provoked to do what he did. It was not like he just decided to shoot up the school for no good reason; he had his own reasons that were leading up to it.
Adults and even other students should care if a student who was teased and taunted finally struck back. Not many people cared about Peter being teased and taunted every day since kindergarten. Most people ignored it and carried on with their life, but what they should have done was say something to the bully. Maybe if someone had tried to help Peter than none of the shooting would have happened, but instead everyone watched him be the target. These days’ kids tend to leave it alone and not say anything, not because they do not care but because they are afraid they will become that victim being picked on every day.
You should not be afraid to step in when you see someone being picked on. Everyone should have the responsibility to allow kids to feel safe, especially in school. Teachers, counselors, and the whole faculty of a school should make sure every student feels comfortable coming to school every day and watch out to see which students are being teased on a daily basis. Some kids are afraid to come to school because they do not feel like getting bullied once again. When other peers see someone being picked on everyday they should do something about it. They do not have to step in, but at least get a teacher or some kind of adult.
Often both of the kids in a fight are punished for it, but if you think about it the one who threw the first punch or hurtful words should be the one punished. The other kid would just be trying to defend themselves. Bullies should think about the consequences of what could happen if they keep up the hurtful comments or physical fighting, just look at what happened to Sterling High.
