Many people believe that the New Jersey driving age should be 18. I intend to prove that the New Jersey legislature should not move the driving age to 18. I believe this would not change the statistics at all by changing the driving age. Although many teenagers are irresponsible, moving the driving age to 18 would not change that.
Most teenagers at 18 are getting ready to go to college. By changing the driving age to 18 this would not allow these kids a sufficient amount of time to drive before going to college. This would lead to many more bad drivers at older ages. Also, people who are bad drivers at 17 would be just as bad at age 18 if they changed the driving age.
Statistics show that many kids die each year from driving. The legislatures feel that by changing the driving age this will change the statistics. I believe that some people are just bad, first year drivers. Those people are going to get into accidents whether they get their licenses at 17 or 18. Every 17 year old should not have to wait until 18 just because a few kids are horrible drivers.
Many 17 year olds may be irresponsible in many ways. These are the kids who should not be on the road if they drive wreck less. I believe that instead of making the driving age 18, just make the driver’s road test much harder. Also make laws much stricter for 17 year olds so they are not irresponsible. This would prevent more deaths and not make people mad by switching the driving age to 18.
I hope that the legislature of New Jersey would take into consideration the wishes of the New Jersey society and not change the driving age to 18 years old. I hope that they will come to their senses and not make rash decisions. These decisions will lead to unnecessary issues and future problems.
