Ladies, who is ready to be a mother at age 15 or 16 years old? Guys, who is ready to be a father as a sophomore in high school? No one is my guess. The vast majority of teenage pregnancies are unintentional and more than one third of those pregnancies end in abortion. In the U.S. 7 in 10 women had sex before age 14 and nearly one million young women nationally, under 20, get pregnant each year. With numbers as high as these, I intend to prove that if you are under the age of 18 there should not be parental notification or consent if you are seeking an abortion.
Depending on the state, there are different parental consent laws but the ones requiring it can delay a teen’s decision making. Abortion is one of the safest, if done in the first twelve weeks, most common procedures. If the minor carries her pregnancy for too long she may face increased hazards. It is said that a teen will usually asses their family’s reaction circumstances fairly accurately and if the teen is too scared time may run out thus resulting in birth.
A baby yields positive and negative outcomes. Unfortunately one of the negative is that two thirds of all teenagers who have a baby will not graduate from high school. This will lead them to be less successful in the job market and then make them more likely to rely on public assistance. Some say that since the parent of the pregnant teen still is responsible for them they should be notified to help them make the best decision, that teen will soon have to be making decision for their own baby so they should be capable of deciding what would be best for both of them.
To be honest, a teenager’s life is not suitable to be taking care of a child. Some do not get enough sleep, some have unhealthy eating habits and some may drink or do drugs. These all will affect the developing baby. Though the effects of a teenage pregnancy is not only limited to having to decide whether or not to keep the baby, how to manage motherhood or whether to make an adoption plan. One of the most direct effects of a teen pregnancy is how the growing baby changes the teenager's body as well as their lifestyle.
An unplanned pregnancy is scary and confusing enough, the teen should not be forced to have a child if they are not ready due to the laws requiring their parents having to be notified. If it was the teen’s decision to have sex in the first place, allow them make the decision as to what happens next in their life. Do not force another human beings responsibility onto a teen.
