Imagine a beautiful little girl; soft golden curls, big blue eyes, really a stunning young child. Now imagine this child is up for adoption. Obviously there are many people willing to adopt this adorable young girl. However, what if one of the applicants they are considering is a homosexual couple. What if this couple is in a stable, happy relationship? What if they could provide an excellent home and education for this child? What if they could love this child more than any other parents could? Many adoption agencies would look past them when trying to find a home for a child just because of their sexual orientation. Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and California are only four states in the US that permit same sex adoption. Is this just? Is it constitutional? I find it very ironic that a country that has laws for equal opportunity, laws that prevent employers from firing or not hiring someone based on race, religion, or sexual orientation, would not apply those same laws to other situations. Why should a loving couple, that could potentially be great parents, be overlooked? Who’s to say that two men or two women cannot give a child the same amount of love and support as a man and a woman can. It all boils down to fear; homophobia. Why are people frightened by this? Why do they think it is wrong? I don’t know, but what I do know is that love is love, no matter what.
One of the big arguments against same sex adoption is bullying. Many people think that because the child has two mommies or two daddies the kid will be teased by other children. Yes, maybe they will be ridiculed for having gay parents but that is life. Kids are teased everyday for a plethora of reasons. You’re fat. You have red hair. You have glasses. I do not think having gay parents would cause such a big issue, especially because schools are now taking bullying very seriously. They have programs that instill good morals in children from a very young age. If the bullying gets serious the school will intervene and work it out between the children.
A stable home environment is mandatory, when looking for a good home for a child. E Harmony is a popular dating website for heterosexual individuals looking for a spouse. The site claims that ninety percent of the couples get married everyday due to the success of their compatibility profile. The premise of the site is the more alike the two partners are the more likely the relationship will succeed. Homosexual couples have a higher level of compatibility by virtue of being the same sex. Studies have shown that homosexual couples are generally more emotionally involved and less likely to split up. Fifty percent of heterosexual marriages end in divorce. In fact, most children in the US do not live with two married parents. According to the 2000 census, only 24% homes were composed of a married mother and father with children living at home. So when looking for a stable environment for a child a homosexual home is just as stable, if not more stable, than a heterosexual home.
Scientific studies have shown that children who grow up in gay households are just the same emotionally and socially as children whose parents are heterosexual. It has been observed that children are more influenced by their interactions with their parents, then by their parents’ sexual orientation. Because of this the American Association of Pediatrics supports homosexual adoption. There are many single mothers and fathers in the world. There are also many single mothers and fathers have raised emotional strong healthy children. These kids grew up without a male or female figure, depending on the circumstances, in their life. Those who believe that the reason gays should not be able to adopt because the kid needs both a male and a female figure in their life are wrong.
This is a huge issue in the United States right now. It has been addressed in such media as The Secret Life of the American Teenager, a popular television show on ABC Family. In this controversial show, a young girl by the name of Amy Juergens is pregnant. She is considering putting her baby up for adoption and one of the couples she is considering is a homosexual couple. The couple seems like they would make great, loving parents. The show airs on Monday nights on 8/7 central, if you are interested in how the story will unfold. I’m happy that some light is being shed on this topic in the media because I truly believe it is something that should be addressed. Banning homosexual couples from adopting is only hurting the children waiting to be adopted, and depriving loving parents that would care for them.
