Life or death, what is it going to be? This is what it comes down to in many cases when a child is created mistakenly. Unfortunately for the unborn child, it cannot speak up for it’s self. This is where the father may step in to rescue his son or daughter from being terminated. However, with the law as it stands, many fathers do not get the chance to stick up for his child. Two people created this life, which means that the same two people should decide the unborn child’s fate together.
The old saying, “It takes two to Tango” sums up that the responsibility and choices of the two people involved in the creation of a child need to be heard or in simpler terms, two people created a child, therefore the same two people need to come up with a solution to the situation. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks this way. Many women feel that since it is their body, they should have the sole say on whether to abort the baby or not. This is not an acceptable reason to cut out the male influence in this important decision. Just because a man is not physically capable of carrying a child does not make the child any less his or mean that he should have any less say in the matter. The father is still capable of loving and caring for the child even though he is not the one carrying it to term. When a decision to abort a child is being made, not just the mother and father are affected but the family of the mother and the family of the father is too.
When a child is created, there is not only a mother and a father; there are grandfathers and grandmothers, and aunts and uncles too, maybe even a sister or brother. All of these people are also affected by an event such as abortion. However, it is usually the family of the mother who has the greatest influence on the decision of the abortion, since the father is basically forced to be a bystander in this situation. In one abortion conflict, the grandfather on the father’s side of the unborn child sat down and talked to the mother of the child who was looking to have an abortion. This mother had had an abortion once before and she was about to get rid of this child too. The grandfather sat their listening to what the other family had to say. Most of the time they would talk about how they wouldn’t have enough money to support the baby and how the baby would ruin the mother’s “lifestyle”. Finally the grandfather had enough of this. He spoke to the girl and her mother about how he felt that she should keep the baby. The pregnant girl and her mother were relentless about the abortion, so the grandfather told the girl to look at her mother. Then he asked her what she was going to do when her mother became old and she would have to take care of her. Without waiting for an answer he went on and asked if she would put a bullet in her mother’s head because she didn’t have enough money to take care of her mom or because it would be “cramping her lifestyle”. The grandfather told the girl, “That will be the very same thing that you intend to do with this baby.” Soon the girl found out that she would be having twins and now if she had the abortion it would be like a double murder. Her and her mother kept delaying the abortion until it was too late and now she had to give birth to the twins. Now those babies are living with their grandparents and their father with a good life. If the twins were aborted the grandfather would have been greatly affected by it along with the father. However some women would not want to go along with the delivery if they didn’t want the child and the father still did, but if there were some type of ground rules maybe the women would think twice about having an abortion.
If a man wants his child and the mother does not, then the man should be willing to set some type of fundamentals to support the child during the time the baby is still inside its mother. He should be willing to cover all medical costs during the pregnancy. By paying for the medical bills this will show that he is able to provide for the child. The father should also pay for all living expenses, such as special types of food the mother must eat for the baby, and maternity clothing. It would be unfair for the father to make the woman have his child and pay for clothes and other necessities that she wouldn’t need if she didn’t carry the baby full term for the father. This type of agreement should be legal and court adopted between the man and the woman. If the father is willing to do all of this to keep his child, then he should definitely have a legal say on whether the baby should be aborted or not.
To not give the father his right to keep his child would be unfair and unjust. Fathers are forced to give up at least fifty percent of their income to the mother in the form of child support for the next eighteen years if the mother decides to keep the baby, whether the father wants the child or not. However if the mother doesn’t want the child, she is allowed to do what pleases her without even having to hear or consider the father’s thoughts. The unborn child could be a happy or tragic little part in more than two people’s lives. Those people would be the families of the baby. That baby could have a life with at least one parent who loves and wants to take care of him or her if the father is willing to concede to certain obligations in order to save the child. If neither parent wants the child than all the father has to do is give the mother his signature stating that he allows the abortion procedure to be done. To give and save a baby’s life could be one of the most precious things a human being can do for its child. Let a father show how much he cares for his unborn child and support paternal rights to abortion.
