Seeking parental consent for an abortion as a young adult can be a difficult task, both courage and careful consideration. 52% percent of abortions in the United States are to women under 25 years old. 20% off these abortions are accounted to teenage girls. With a record high of 3,700 abortions every day; families across the nation are faced with the thought of teenage motherhood now more than ever (abortionno.org). By New Jersey State law minors are not necessary to obtain any means of official consent before getting an abortion. However, abortion’s can be very serious and should involve parents. The parent’s legal responsibility over the child and the risk of teenage motherhood hangs over the debate on the decision of having parental consent or not. Teenagers under 18 years old should receive their parental guardian’s approval before having an abortion.
Parental Responsibility is the legal responsibility parents have to their children. Until the age of 18 parents must look after the well being and health of their child. Since the well being of a child involves the health and of their body having an abortion is a crucial decision that both parents and children should have together. Just as it is the responsibility of the parents to watch over their kids, in turn the developing baby should be watched as well. In some cases the teen may not take the right course of action when pregnant with the baby.
As a young adult the day to day patterns and routines in which teens follow travel different paths than that of adults. This may involve smoking, consuming alcohol, or committing other damaging acts that could have potential risks for the baby. Abortion may be the correct decision for a teen that follows an unhealthy lifestyle. If she wants to have an abortion and exterminate the developing baby than the parents should be consented. The embryo well being is important if the mother does decide to have the baby.
Teenage pregnancy can be a physical, emotional, and social disaster for a young girl. During the course of a pregnancy a girl’s body changes in size and weight. There is a large physical transformation that takes place, leaving the mother noticeably different. This can make emotional feelings of frustration and anger. Girls with teenage pregnancies fall victims as social outcast from the typical society. Sometimes abortions are avoided because the teen doesn’t know have enough information or resources to carry out an abortion. In these cases they sometimes fall victim to the many problems linked with being a pregnant teen. If it were mandatory to get parent consent for an abortion more girls would talk to their parents on the issue.
Parental consent for abortions comes down to one thought, course of action. In the case of an abortion a person’s life is at risk.
