Some people might say to themselves that popularity is something to die for, while others just shrug their shoulders and say, “Popularity? Whatever, I don’t care about it.” Being popular isn’t something teenagers should stress over. So what if you’re popular or not? As long as you have friends that you can trust and know that will always be there for you, you’ll be alright.
Popularity isn’t something that teenagers should stress over because it’s a stupid topic. Yes, it would be fun for everyone in your grade to know who you are, but that’s not the point. You’ll still have people who are outside of your close group of friends that know who you are, even if you aren’t popular. Being popular is not as fun as teenagers think it is. It is hard to stay in a popular crowd if you do not quite fit in with them. In order to fit in, you have to be a completely different person that you used to be. For example, Josie, from Nineteen Minutes, became a completely different person when she was in high school. In order to fit in with the popular crowd, Josie put on a fake act and acted like a completely cruel person. She used to be best friends with Peter, the boy who was picked on the most, until one day everything changed. Josie made a joke about Peter and that’s when the popular crowd accepted her into their group. Josie basically left Peter in the dust all by himself. When Josie and Peter were friends, they were only friends with each other, and not with anyone else.
Being popular also means that you end up ditching your real friends who you actually enjoyed hanging out with. Once the popular crowd accepts you, there is no way that they will let you bring your “geeky” friends (in the popular crowds point of view) along to be popular. You have a choice to be popular or to stay with the friends you like the most. In my opinion, I would stay with my real best friends. At first when you hang out with the popular crowd, it is awkward because you have never hung out with them before so you do not really know what to say or do to be considered “cool”. You cannot act the way you do in front of your other friends because the popular kids will think that you’re a loser. Basically, you just have to sit their quietly and talk once in a while, but make sure that you do not say anything stupid.
The difference between being popular and belonging to the group is that not everyone is noticed. When you’re popular, you’re the ones in the group that everybody knows who you are. When you belong to the group, you’re the ones who people know that you are friends with the popular kids. Not everyone can be popular because it takes a lot to become popular. You always have to look good, wear the latest style, have a lot of friends, and be noticed. Some kids just do not care and do what they want. Other kids try their hardest to be noticed and sometimes end up looking like idiots.
In conclusion, being popular is not the most important thing in the world. As long as you have friends, do not even think about becoming popular. If you do not have any friends, look for a crowd that seems like the kind of people who you would want to hang out with. Do not go after the popular crowd and try to fit in because most likely they will just turn you down and make fun of you. The smartest choice would be to just be yourself around everyone and you will be accepted by another group of people who like you.
