I intend to prove that the father of the unborn fetus should not have a say in a woman’s choice to have an abortion.
I believe that only women should have a say in abortion because the fetus is inside of a woman’s body; not the man’s. It should be the woman’s choice weather or not they want to carry a child and give birth. Men don’t have to worry about caring for something that is developing inside of them. There are no health issues for a man during pregnancy. Women have to watch what they eat, drink and do in their everyday life for the entire length of pregnancy. There could be health and safety issues which only pertain to the woman or the fetus. No one should be able to force a person to make a decision regarding their health.
Women should have the only say in abortion because they might not be able to or want to take care of a child. We should have the right to decide when and how we want to start a family. It has become socially acceptable to have or adopt a child without being married and to have a child from a sperm donor. Women are able to make informed choices regarding their lives. By allowing the “father” to have a say, it would take away a women’s right of personal freedom and choice.
In 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade that a mother may decide to abort her pregnancy, for any reason, up until the fetus is viable. It was decided that a fetus is viable after three months. The ruling does not mention a father only that a mother may decide. If a fetus is not viable before three months then how can it have a father? At that point, the man would only be considered a sperm donor. After three months, an abortion is only an option when it is life threatening or to protect the health of the mother.
Many individual States have tried since the Roe v Wade decision to add laws that would require parental or spousal consent and notification. The only amendment to Roe v Wade was the Hyde Amendment in 1976. The Hyde Amendment only addressed Federal funding. All other laws were considered unconstitutional.
Women have successfully fought for the same rights of men. By allowing a father a say regarding abortion, it would set women’s rights back decades. Where would the interference end? A woman has the ability to make personal choices regarding her body and health. She also is able to decide what is best for her and when, if ever, to start a family. Allowing men to contribute to a woman’s decisions would take away her personal freedom and violate her constitutional rights.
