Persuasive Speech: I intend to prove that marijuana should be legalized in the United States.
Marijuana has been used in internationally for centuries and was introduced by immigrants from Mexico to the United States in the early 1900's. It was deemed extremely harmful at first, but the government conducted six years of research on the drug and thought its only had the potential of being a gateway drug. In the 1960-70's, the use of marijuana sprung during the drug war and laws making the drug illegal were strictly enforced. But was enforcing the laws against marijuana really necessary? I intend to prove that cannabis sativa, in moderation, does not have harmful effects and should be legalized in the United States.
Legalization of weed has been a well debated issue in the United States, and some individual states even are coming around both decriminalization of illegal weed and availability of medical marijuana. These are huge steps towards mass production which would boost our economy in many ways. Consider this: If marijuana was mass produced and sold with tobacco products, the money made from the taxes would boost our current economy greatly. With over 60 million people in the U.S. using cannabis today, it would make more sense if it came from a safer source anyway.
Legalizing weed would also limit and decrease the number of street drug dealers who sell marijuana. Drug dealers have a seriously negative effect on our society. Drug dealers, who are criminals, are often harmful people. Dealing with a drug dealer, you do not know if you are going to be beaten for your money, completely ripped off, or the product you buy could be laced with harder drugs. All of these crimes would be eliminated if you could buy cannabis in stores when you are of legal age. This would leave police extra time to be involved in more serious and potentially harmful crimes.
Another reason to legalize is the more recent research done on the drug claims that in moderation, marijuana is by far no more harmful that consumption of alcohol and cigarettes. This is an understatement, considering there has never been a recorded death from cannabis ever and the number of deaths relating to cigarette smoke and alcohol consumption are skyrocketing in the United States. In fact, the use of marijuana medically has been said to reduce pain with no physical or psychological addiction, unlike addictive painkillers.
Believing that legalization will set an example for younger children is simply not a reason to ignore all of the positive benefits from legalization. A simple way to avoid those possibilities would be to make underage use, public use, and advertisement of marijuana illegal. That still leaves people the freedom to relax but will not influence the youth of our society. I hope that the information I presented made you agree that legalization would be a positive effect in the United States.
