When a mother cannot take care of the children that she currently has at home, she should not be able to be artificially impregnated with any more children. Something or someone has to be able to take a stand to make sure that this does not happen. Society should not have to pay for the misguided actions of someone who obviously is not in a position to make intelligent decisions.
Nadya Sulman, already having six kids, was living in a two bedroom house with her parents and living off of welfare and disability checks. Three of her six children are special needs children who do not get the care that they need. Under these circumstances, Nadya can barely manage to take care of the children she already parents. After her first six children, there were still frozen embryos left over from her previous harvesting and fertilizations. All the eggs were fertilized by the same anonymous donor but he is in no way in the picture. His name is not known and he does not do anything to support his children.
Nadya’s mother, Angela, was taking care of the six children in her small home. She feared that Nadya would not be able to support this many kids and that she was too young. She asked, even begged, the doctors involved not to go through with the procedure. She felt for sure that the doctors would be able to step in and do something.
Instead of having the remaining embryos destroyed, Nadya decided that she would like to have them implanted. She had six embryos implanted, and after two of them split, she found herself pregnant with eight children. If the pregnancy was successful, she would then have a total of fourteen children.
After hearing of the circumstances around the pregnancy and birth, the public, as usual, stepped up to help this poor woman who could not even comprehend the supply and demand of this many children. Pampers offered a lifetime supply of diapers and many more offers were beginning to come to light. When this type of thing happens, the public, being afraid that the children will not get the supplies and care they need, usually try to help as best as they can. After finding out the circumstances behind this well publicized event, and the fact that Nadya already had six children that she was not able to properly take care of, Pampers, as well as other offers made to her were soon rescinded.
The doctor who performed the implantation was well aware that Nadya already had six children at home. After hearing from Nadya’s parents, he should not have gone through with the procedure. He may not have had a legal stand to take but he should have had a moral one. At Nadya’s age there is no way that it was a good decision to implant six embryos. When a doctor is aware of specific details in a person’s life that could affect the care of her children, he should be able to stand up and do what is in the best interest of the future children. A physician takes an oath to do no harm, but in this situation, by going through with the procedure he definitely put the future children of Nadya at risk. Any doctor that would do this after having full knowledge of the circumstances should have to face the possibility that his license could be revoked.
When a mother cannot take care of the children that she currently has at home, she should not be able to be artificially impregnated with any more children. There has to be a system so that this cannot happen again. If the medical community would stand up and take action when something like this occurs, then the chance of any more children being born into a home that cannot care for their health and well being would be greatly reduced. This did not have to happen. This was a pregnancy that was orchestrated by a doctor through invitro-fertilization. There were many signs that should have been seen. It is not fair that society, and even more important, the children have to suffer because one doctor did not feel it was his moral duty to refuse this procedure.
