I intend to prove that students at Shore do not need to take midterms or finals if they maintain a certain grade.
Did you know that at some schools students do not have to take midterms or finals? The schools encourage their students to do better by almost bribing them with getting out of tests by getting good grades. Students have many things to worry about between parental pressure, sports, or just not being able to understand the information. Studying for a two hour exam can really damage their thinking abilities.
Everyday parents bug their children to do their best in school or get a good grade on a test. They might not understand the pressure they are putting on their kids, and that they are scared to take a test. Students who care about their future want to do well on tests, and when their parents want them to do well there is extra pressure on their kid. Midterms and finals just make kids freak out and worry for days, when the test is just to refresh their minds. Kids want to make their parents happy, and bringing home a bad grade doesn’t make them happy.
Sports and other extra-curricular activities after school also hinder a students’ ability to study and do well on tests. Right after school kids walk down the hallway to the locker room, get changed, and go to practice for a few hours. When they get home they have to eat, take a shower, and do homework. When there are midterms and finals, it is even harder to study because the test is longer and harder. Sports take up a lot of free time, and are just as important as schoolwork for some people.
Most midterms are to refresh your mind, but teachers make them too hard for something you learned more than a few months earlier. According to Barbara Pytel, exams and standardized tests are made for average students. The students who struggle are “overlooked”. educationalissues.suite101.com/article.cfm/state_graduation_exam_debate
If there was something to look forward to more students would try harder. If maintaining a certain grade and getting out of testing makes students try harder and focus more in school, that should be an option. If there is no prize at the end of the road, why would you try to get there? Promoting rewards for students who achieve themselves during the year should be welcomed because it makes students want to do well in school.
Midterms and finals are a nuisance to all students, and even teachers. They have to make up a long and hard test and grade one from every student they teach. The students who maintain certain grades in each class should be exempt for their hard work. Being rewarded is a big way to help students want to learn and do well in school. If they have something to look forward to, there would be better grades throughout schools everywhere. The schools grade average would go up, and the school would look better for everyone else. Getting rid of midterms and finals would better the students who really cared about their future
