People go through their childhood, teens, and adulthood trying to become popular. They sacrifice their true friends, trust and most of all, having fun in life. Can something like “Popularity” be that important to a person? Well, to some people it is and to others it is the least of their worries. When a person is popular they feel like they are at the top of the world and are looking down on everyone else. They know that people envy them and they live for it.
For the rest of the people who aren’t “Popular”, well, they do just fine. In fact they probably live life better then the “Popular” people. Sure nobody thinks they do because nobody envies them. But to be honest the “Unpopular” people have real friends. They can trust their friends; sure they don’t millions of friends. But the friends that they do have accept them for who they are. What they do and how they act, with out judging them. In the popularity world, you might think you have “Best Friends or Best buds” but who knows. In my friend history, I’ve had friends “metaphorically” slap me in the face. Is that what people call a “friend” these days? Because to be honest, I think a “friend” who does something like that, doesn’t even deserve to be called a friend.
Anyone who wants to be popular might have a chance if they really want it. When a person wants to become popular it’s like taking the longest and most challenging test of your life. You don’t know who your friend is or when someone is telling the truth or not. It’s a real mental test, you have to know who you are supposed to hate. Who you are supposed to like, date and joke about. But most important, is that you have to know how to act in life as a popular person. In Nineteen Minutes Peter treats a person the way he gets treated just so he feels like he is popular for once in his life. Page 158-159 starts on the 2nd paragraph on page 158. Peter treats Dolores like he had been treated in the past. By embarrassing, humiliating but basically hurting her. Of course he doesn’t realize what he did till after the deed was done. Then Josie shows her true colors. By not listening to Peter even though she knows he is right. And drops the tampon on Dolores’s desk just to get a rise out of her “friends.”
Life brings so many opportunities to a person. Why should a person waste their life trying to become popular? For these people who want to become popular, some end up wasting their lives just trying to become popular. To some people this doesn’t mean anything to them, because they just like the thought of becoming popular. But they never truly understood the concept of “wasting your life,” this concept is just a myth to them. They think they have all the time in the world. But in reality nobody has all the time in the world. And when you waste this time just to feel like you’re at the top of the world. The end results end up being the total opposite of what you thought they would be. In fact, in the end you’re never truly happy.
If you step out of line you could get your popularity status taken away in a second and will get treated like you were never popular to begin with. So think about it before you want to become popular… Is that the kind of life you want to live? Or would you rather be “unpopular” and be who you are?
