One thing parents fear their children going through is harrassment, bullying, and being an outkast. However, does that mean if it happens that their advice should be to tell their children to ignore it and toughen up? Is it okay to tell their children to ignore their feelings of loneliness and hurt? The answer is no. Children need guidance in their lives, and if parents take it among themselves to advise them to ignore being bullied, then they are not doing their job.
Being bullied as a child is hurtful and can really affect the victims' lives. Nobody can do anything about being bullied besides the teachers whowitness it occuring and the parents of the victims who have to deal with the pain of their children. Parents and teachers who just tell the victims to ignore that pain are wrong. Referring back to Nineteen Minutes, by Jodi Picoult, Lacy and Lewis had a son who was a common victim of bring bullied on a daily basis. Their advice to Peter was to ignore it and toughen up, and what did that advice lead him to? Jail time for the rest of his life because of taking the lives of ten people.
If bullying and harrassment is going to be prevented, the correct advice must be given and certainly thr correct discipline must be forced upon those bullying. For example, in Nineteen Minutes, by Jodi Picoult, when Matt, Drew, and their possy were bullying Peter, the teachers would just tell them to knock it off and leave it at that. Whereas, if the proper procedures were being followed they would immediately be punished and have to suffer from the appropriate consequences.
When others, including other classmates, teachers, parents, etc., are being physically and/or emotionally hurt, precautions should be addressed as quickly as possible. Otherwise, nothing in the field of being bullied and harrassed will change for the better.
