The Perks of being a Wallflower by Steven Chbosky is an excellent book. The book gives a perspective of a typical, shy, high school student. This book shows how a boy named Charlie, is an intelligent student and gets excellent grades but does not have many friends. Charlie meets a girl who invites him to hang out with her friends. Through this new girl, Sam, Charlie experiences something totally and completely new.
Charlie is different than his brother and sister. He does not seem to really care about anything. Charlie has not been introduced to sex unlike his sister. Charlie walked in on his sister having sex in their basement with some boy. His sister will not associate with Charlie because he is a freak, so Charlie has no one to stick up for him. Charlie is different than his brother because Charlie’s brother is a football star. To continue his life, Charlie works really hard in school to get academic scholarships. He will never be able to get an athletic scholarship like his brother.
Sam and Patrick introduce everything to Charlie. Charlie learns about masturbation, and becomes somewhat addicted to doing it. Charlie is also introduced to teenage drinking, drug abuse, and sex. Without Sam and Patrick, Charlie would be a quiet, kept-to person, similar to a wallflower, someone who never experiences anything. Sam, her brother Patrick and several of their friends perform the Rocky Horror Picture Show dressed up in full costume reciting lines from the movie perfectly. Charlie falls in love with Sam, but he knows he will never get the chance to be with her.
The most interesting part about the novel is that Charlie writes about his life in letters. He sends them to a person whom he has never met before. Charlie’s early life is horrifying. During middle school, his best friend committed suicide and Charlie has not been the same since. Also, Charlie’s favorite family member, his aunt, died, and Charlie feels lost without her.
